Safety Information

Read and understand all instructions before operation. Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  1. PPE: Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps/pants, and sturdy boots.
  2. Work Area: Clear area of tripping hazards and ensure bystanders are at a safe distance.
  3. Kickback Awareness: Be aware of the kickback zone (upper quadrant of bar tip).
  4. Fuel Safety: Refuel in a well-ventilated area with engine off and cool.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. The chain brake must be functional before each use.

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain.

  1. Attach Guide Bar: Place bar onto studs, ensuring proper alignment with oil holes.
  2. Install Chain: Fit chain over bar sprocket and onto drive sprocket, with cutting teeth facing forward on top.
  3. Tension Chain: Adjust tensioning screw until chain fits snugly against bar but can be pulled by hand.
  4. Fill Fluids: Add STIHL-approved 2-stroke engine oil/gasoline mix to fuel tank and bar/chain oil to oil reservoir.

CAUTION! Use only STIHL-approved oils and fuel mixtures. Incorrect fuel can damage the engine.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting.

Left Side: Throttle Trigger, Throttle Lockout, Master Control Lever (Choke/Start/Run), STOP Switch.

Right Side: Chain Brake/Front Hand Guard, Chain Tensioner, Oil Filler Cap.

Rear: Fuel Filler Cap, Rear Handle with Anti-Vibration mounts, Starter Grip.

Operation: Master Control sets choke (cold start), half-throttle (warm start), or run. Throttle lockout must be depressed to engage throttle. Pull chain brake handle toward front handle to engage brake.

Fuel & Lubrication

Use fresh, high-quality fuel and STIHL-specific lubricants.

  1. Fuel Mix: 50:1 ratio. Mix gasoline (89+ octane, ethanol-free recommended) with STIHL 2-Stroke Engine Oil.
  2. Bar & Chain Oil: Use STIHL Bar and Chain Oil for optimal lubrication and bar life.
  3. Filling: Clean area around caps. Fill fuel and oil tanks before operation. Do not overfill.
  4. Storage: For storage over 30 days, drain fuel system or use fuel stabilizer.

Tip: Shake fuel mix container thoroughly before filling. Never use straight gasoline or motor oil.

Starting & Operation

Follow correct starting procedure to avoid flooding and ensure safe operation.

  1. Cold Start: Engage chain brake. Set Master Control to choke (full up). Pull starter cord sharply until engine 'pops'. Move lever to half-throttle position. Pull again to start.
  2. Warm Start: Set Master Control to half-throttle position. Pull starter cord.
  3. Running: Disengage chain brake by pulling handle toward you. Squeeze throttle trigger to increase engine speed.
  4. Cutting: Use proper cutting techniques. Let the saw do the work; do not force it. Be aware of pinch points.
  5. Stopping: Release throttle, allow engine to idle briefly, then press STOP switch to '0'.

WARNING! Always engage the chain brake when starting, carrying, or not actively cutting. Never drop-start the saw.

Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance ensures performance, safety, and longevity.

IntervalTask
Before Each UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and brake function. Check fuel/oil levels.
DailyClean air filter, check for loose fasteners, clean saw body.
WeeklyInspect spark plug, clean spark arrestor screen (if equipped).
MonthlyCheck fuel filter, replace if dirty. Inspect anti-vibration elements.
As NeededSharpen chain, replace worn bar, clean cylinder fins.

CAUTION! Perform maintenance only when the engine is off and cool. Disconnect spark plug wire for major work.

Chain Sharpening & Tensioning

A sharp, properly tensioned chain is essential for safe and efficient cutting.

  1. Tensioning: Loosen bar nuts. Turn tensioning screw clockwise until chain is snug against bar but can be pulled around by hand. Retighten bar nuts.
  2. Sharpening: Use a round file matching chain pitch (e.g., 5/32" for .325" pitch). File each cutter at the specified angle (typically 30°). Maintain equal file strokes per cutter. File depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge.
  3. Inspection: Check for damaged, cracked, or excessively worn cutters or drive links. Replace chain if damaged.

WARNING! Always wear heavy gloves when handling the chain. A loose chain can derail; an overtightened chain can break.

Storage

Prepare the chainsaw correctly for storage to prevent fuel system issues.

  1. Short-Term (under 30 days): Run engine until fuel tank is empty.
  2. Long-Term: Drain all fuel from tank and carburetor. Run engine until it stops. Remove spark plug, add a few drops of 2-stroke oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly to coat, reinstall plug. Clean entire saw. Store in a dry, secure place.

CAUTION! Store fuel mix and saw in a well-ventilated area away from open flames, sparks, or heat sources.

Troubleshooting
