Safety Instructions

Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow chainsaw safety protocols.

  1. PPE: Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, and steel-toed boots.
  2. Pre-Operation Check: Inspect bar, chain, and saw for damage before each use.
  3. Kickback Awareness: Understand kickback zones; use reduced-kickback chain and bar tip.
  4. Secure Workpiece: Ensure material is stable and supported before cutting.
  5. Two-Handed Operation: Always grip saw firmly with both hands.
  6. Clear Area: Keep bystanders and pets at a safe distance.

WARNING! Kickback can cause severe injury or death. Never use the upper tip of the bar for cutting. Always follow manufacturer safety guidelines.

Installation & Mounting

Mounting the Rollomatic E bar to your Stihl chainsaw.

  1. Ensure chainsaw is off and spark plug is disconnected.
  2. Remove bar nuts and old bar/chain.
  3. Clean bar mounting area and oiling ports on saw.
  4. Place new Rollomatic E bar onto studs, aligning oil holes.
  5. Install chain, ensuring correct direction (cutting teeth forward on top).
  6. Reinstall bar nuts finger-tight, then adjust chain tension.
  7. Tighten bar nuts to specified torque with wrench.
  8. Check chain tension again after tightening.

CAUTION! Incorrect installation can lead to chain derailment, excessive wear, or injury. Refer to your chainsaw's manual for specific torque values.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Understanding the bar components for proper operation and maintenance.

Bar Components: Tip (Rollomatic E design), body (rails and groove), oil holes, mounting holes, gauge markings, length stamp.

Saw Interface: Bar studs, oil pump outlet, chain tensioner pin.

Chain Compatibility: Match chain pitch and gauge to bar specifications. Use Stihl recommended chains for optimal performance.

Chain Tensioning & Adjustment

Proper chain tension is critical for safety and performance.

  1. Loosen bar nuts with wrench.
  2. Using tensioning screw (usually on side), adjust until chain fits snugly against bar but can be pulled around by hand.
  3. Lift tip of bar to take up slack, then retighten bar nuts to specified torque.
  4. Re-check tension; chain should not sag from bar rails.

Tip: Chain tension changes when hot. Check and adjust frequently during use, especially when new.

Cutting Techniques

Maximize bar life and ensure safe cutting.

  1. Planning: Assess grain, tension, and drop zone before cutting.
  2. Starting Cut: Use lower part of bar, not the tip.
  3. Buckling: Support log; cut from top, avoid ground contact.
  4. Felling: Use proper notch and back cut techniques.
  5. Limbing: Stand on opposite side of log; cut downward.
  6. Avoid Pinching: Use wedges if cut begins to close.
  7. Bar Maintenance During Cut: Ensure oiler is working; clear debris from groove.

WARNING! Do not force the saw; let the chain do the work. Overheating damages bar and chain.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Regular maintenance extends bar life.

  1. Daily Cleaning: Remove sawdust and resin from bar groove and oil holes using a bar groove cleaner.
  2. Inspection: Check for bent rails, uneven wear, cracked or worn tip.
  3. Filing Rails: If rails develop burrs, lightly file them flat (use a flat file).
  4. Rotation: Flip bar periodically to wear both rails evenly.
  5. Oiling System: Ensure oil ports are clear; use recommended bar and chain oil.

CAUTION! A worn or damaged bar can cause chain derailment and kickback. Replace if rails are significantly uneven or tip is damaged.

Storage

Proper storage prevents rust and damage.

Clean bar thoroughly after use. Apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust. Store in a dry place, hanging or lying flat to avoid bending. Keep away from moisture and corrosive materials.

Regulatory Information

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Chain derails frequentlyLoose chain, worn bar rails, damaged tipAdjust tension; inspect and file rails; replace bar if worn.
Bar overheats/smokesInsufficient oil, dull chain, pinched cutCheck oiler and oil level; sharpen chain; free pinched bar.
Uneven wear on one railBar not flipped regularly, saw misalignmentFlip bar; check saw for damage or bent components.
Chain cuts crookedUneven rail wear, uneven chain sharpeningFile rails evenly; sharpen chain cutters uniformly.
Reduced cutting performanceDull chain, incorrect chain/bar matchSharpen chain; verify chain pitch and gauge match bar.
Excessive kickbackUsing bar tip, incorrect chain type, worn sprocketAvoid cutting with tip; use low-kickback chain; replace worn drive sprocket.

Service: For repairs or replacement, contact an authorized Stihl dealer. Do not attempt to weld or straighten a bent bar.
