Safety Instructions

Read and understand all instructions before use. Always wear proper PPE.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear chainsaw chaps or pants, safety helmet with face shield and hearing protection, heavy-duty gloves, and steel-toed boots.
  2. Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders and pets at least 15 meters away. Ensure secure footing. Do not operate in poor weather or visibility.
  3. Kickback Zone: Be aware of the upper quadrant of the guide bar tip. Avoid contact with this area during cutting.
  4. Fuel Safety: Refuel in a well-ventilated area with engine off and cool. Use only STIHL-approved fuel mixtures. Wipe off spills.

WARNING! A chainsaw is a dangerous tool. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. The chain brake is a safety device but does not eliminate the risk of kickback.

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain.

  1. Attach Guide Bar and Chain: Place bar on studs. Loop chain over sprocket and onto bar groove with cutters facing forward on top. Install bar nut and tension chain.
  2. Fill Fuel and Oil: Use STIHL MotoMix or a 50:1 mixture of high-quality 2-stroke oil and unleaded gasoline (min. 89 octane). Fill chain oil tank with STIHL chain oil.
  3. Check Chain Tension: Chain should be snug against the bar but pull freely by hand. Re-tension when cold.
  4. Check Controls: Ensure throttle trigger, throttle trigger lockout, and chain brake function correctly.

CAUTION! The chain is extremely sharp. Always wear protective gloves when handling.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Main components: Front Handle with Chain Brake lever, Rear Handle with Throttle Trigger, Throttle Trigger Lockout, Master Control Lever (combines choke, stop control, and run positions), Decompression Valve, Chain Catcher, Muffler, Fuel and Oil Caps, Side-access Chain Tensioner.

Master Control Lever Positions: - STOP (0): Engine off. - CHOKE (up): For cold start. - RUN (horizontal): Normal operation. - FAST IDLE (halfway between RUN and CHOKE): For warm start or after refueling.

Chain Brake: Can be engaged manually by pushing the front hand guard forward. Will engage automatically (inertia-activated) upon kickback.

Starting & Stopping the Engine

Cold Start: 1. Engage chain brake (push hand guard forward). 2. Press decompression valve (if equipped). 3. Set Master Control lever to CHOKE (full up). 4. Press the fuel pump bulb (primer) 5-10 times until fuel is visible. 5. Place saw on ground, hold rear handle with right foot, grip front handle with left hand. 6. Pull starter handle sharply until engine fires (usually 2-5 pulls). 7. Immediately move Master Control lever to FAST IDLE position. 8. Pull starter handle again to start engine. 9. Briefly blip throttle to disengage fast idle. Chain brake can now be disengaged.

Warm Start: Set Master Control lever to FAST IDLE and pull starter.

Stopping: Move Master Control lever to STOP (0).

WARNING! Always engage the chain brake when starting. Ensure the chain is clear of the ground and any objects.

Operation & Cutting Techniques

Use a firm two-handed grip. Let the saw do the work.

  1. Basic Cutting: Use full throttle just before and during the cut. Do not "saw" with the bar tip.
  2. Felling: Plan escape path. Make notch cut (1/3 of tree diameter), then make felling cut from opposite side. Use wedges if necessary.
  3. Limbing: Work from trunk outward. Support saw on trunk when possible.
  4. Bucking: Support log properly. Be aware of tension and compression wood to avoid pinching the bar.
  5. Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip. Do not cut with the upper tip. Be aware of wood tension and hidden objects.

Tip: Keep the chain sharp. A dull chain requires more force, increases fatigue, and is more dangerous.

Maintenance Schedule

IntervalTask
Daily / Before UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Check fuel and oil levels. Inspect for loose nuts/bolts. Clean air intake.
Every 5 HoursClean spark plug, check electrode gap (0.5 mm). Clean exterior of saw.
Every 20 HoursClean or replace air filter. Check fuel filter. Clean cooling fins.
Every 100 HoursReplace spark plug. Clean muffler screen (spark arrestor). Check anti-vibration elements. Have dealer check carburetion (M-Tronic).
As NeededSharpen chain. Replace worn guide bar. Replace worn sprocket.

CAUTION! Disconnect spark plug boot before performing any maintenance other than chain tensioning and lubrication.

Chain & Bar Care

Proper care extends life and improves safety.

  1. Sharpening: Use correct round file size for chain (.325" chain typically uses a 4.0 mm file). Maintain correct filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters to equal length.
  2. Depth Gauges: File down depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge to maintain proper height (approx. 0.025" below cutter tip).
  3. Bar Maintenance: Regularly clean bar groove and oil holes. Flip bar weekly for even wear. Dress bar rails with a flat file if burred.
  4. Lubrication: Always use STIHL chain oil or equivalent. Check oil flow by running saw at full throttle over light-colored surface; a line of oil should appear.

Storage

For storage longer than 30 days:

  1. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops to clear carburetor.
  2. Remove chain, clean it and the bar, and coat with oil.
  3. Clean entire saw, especially cooling fins and air filter area.
  4. Store in a dry, dust-free place, away from heat sources and out of reach of children.
  5. Remove spark plug, add a teaspoon of engine oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly 2-3 times, reinstall plug.

CAUTION! Never store a saw with fuel in the tank for extended periods. Old fuel can damage engine components.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Engine will not startNo fuel, flooded, bad spark, master control positionCheck fuel. Set control to STOP, open throttle, pull starter 10x to clear flood. Check spark plug. Ensure Master Control is in correct start position.
Engine starts but diesClogged fuel filter, air filter, carburetor adjustment (M-Tronic may need reset)Replace fuel/air filters. For M-Tronic: Start and run at full throttle for 1 minute (no load) to allow self-adjustment.
Loss of powerDull chain, clogged air filter, muffler screen blocked, fuel issuesSharpen chain. Clean/replace air filter. Clean spark arrestor screen. Use fresh fuel.
Chain does not turn or turns slowlyChain brake engaged, clutch worn, sprocket worn, chain too tightDisengage chain brake. Check clutch and sprocket for wear. Loosen chain tension.
Excessive vibrationLoose components, worn anti-vibration buffers, unbalanced chain/barTighten all nuts/bolts. Check and replace anti-vibration elements. Check chain sharpening and bar condition.
Chain does not oilEmpty oil tank, clogged oil holes, faulty oil pumpFill tank. Clean bar oil holes and saw outlet. Check oil pump drive and lines.

Reset M-Tronic: If performance issues persist, perform a reset: Start the engine and let it run at idle for 3 minutes without touching the throttle. Then run at full throttle (no load) for 1 minute.

Service: For repairs beyond basic maintenance, contact an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. Use only STIHL-approved replacement parts.
