Safety Instructions
Read and understand all instructions before use. Failure to follow warnings can result in serious injury or death.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, sturdy gloves, long pants, and non-slip boots.
- Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders, children, and pets at least 15 meters away. Operate only in good light and visibility.
- Fuel Safety: Mix fuel outdoors. Use only STIHL 2-stroke engine oil and unleaded gasoline (min. 89 octane). Store fuel in approved containers.
- Operation: Keep firm footing. Do not operate on ladders or unstable surfaces. Do not operate the tool with one hand.
- Kickback Danger: Be aware of kickback, especially with cutting attachments. Use the shoulder strap (optional) for better control.
WARNING! The exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas. Never operate the engine in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area.
Assembly & First Use
Unpack and inspect all parts. Assemble the powerhead with the desired KombiTool attachment.
- Handle Assembly: The loop handle is pre-attached. Ensure all screws are tight.
- Attaching a KombiTool: Align the drive tube of the attachment with the powerhead coupling. Push together until they click into place. Pull back on the coupling sleeve to detach.
- Fuel Mixing: Use a clean, approved fuel can. Mix at a 50:1 ratio (2% oil). Shake gently. Fill the tank, avoiding spillage.
- Starting the Engine (Cold): Set the master control lever to the choke position (✱). Press the fuel pump bulb at least 5 times. Place the unit on the ground, hold securely, and pull the starter handle briskly. After the engine fires, move the master control lever to the warm start/half-throttle position. Pull again to start. Allow a brief warm-up.
- Starting (Warm): Set master control lever to warm start/half-throttle position and pull the starter handle.
CAUTION! Never start the engine with an attachment engaged or with the throttle locked. Always start on a firm, level surface.

Attachments have their own specific controls (e.g., feed tap for trimmer heads, gear shift for hedge trimmer). Refer to the specific attachment manual.
Attaching KombiTools
The KM system allows quick tool changes. Compatible tools include: Grass Trimmer (FS), Brushcutter (BC), Hedge Trimmer (HS), Cultivator (MM), Edger (PA), Pole Pruner (HT/HL).
- Ensure the engine is OFF and cool.
- Pull back the coupling sleeve on the powerhead fully.
- Insert the drive tube of the KombiTool into the powerhead coupling.
- Release the sleeve. You should hear a click. Pull on the attachment to ensure it is locked securely.
- For attachments requiring drive shaft lubrication, fill the appropriate gear housing with STIHL gear oil before attachment.
Tip: Keep coupling surfaces clean and free of debris for a secure connection.
Operation
General operating procedures for the KM 56 RC powerhead.
- Starting: Follow the steps in Section 4. Always start with the attachment clear of the ground and other objects.
- Running: Allow the engine to warm up at idle for about 30 seconds. Operate at full throttle for cutting tasks. Do not "lug" the engine (run under heavy load at low RPM).
- Stopping: Release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle. Move the master control lever to the STOP (0) position.
- Using Attachments: Refer to the specific operator's manual for each KombiTool for correct and safe operating techniques, including proper handling, cutting motions, and personal protective equipment.
- Transport & Storage: For short transports, secure the unit. For longer storage, empty the fuel tank and run the carburetor dry.
WARNING! Never operate the machine with a damaged or improperly attached cutting tool. Always inspect before use.
Maintenance & Storage
Regular maintenance ensures long life and safe operation. Perform maintenance with the engine OFF and spark plug boot disconnected.
- Daily/After Use: Clean the exterior. Check for loose screws/nuts. Inspect the cutting attachment for damage.
- Air Filter: Clean regularly (more often in dusty conditions). Remove foam filter, wash in warm soapy water, dry, and re-oil with STIHL air filter oil.
- Spark Plug: Check electrode gap (0.5 mm / 0.020 in) and clean. Replace if electrodes are worn.
- Fuel Filter: Replace if clogged or annually.
- Carburetor Adjustment: Factory set. Only adjust if necessary and by trained personnel.
- Spark Arresting Screen (Muffler): Clean regularly to prevent carbon buildup (requires special tool).
- Storage (>30 days): Drain fuel tank and run carburetor dry. Remove spark plug, add a few drops of oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly 2-3 times, reinstall plug. Store in a dry, secure place.
CAUTION! Use only genuine STIHL replacement parts. Improper parts can cause damage or unsafe operation.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
| Engine will not start | No fuel, flooded, spark plug faulty, master control position wrong | Check fuel, set control to STOP, wait if flooded, check/replace spark plug. |
| Engine starts but stops | Dirty air filter, clogged fuel filter, faulty fuel line | Clean/replace air filter. Replace fuel filter. Inspect fuel line. |
| Engine lacks power | Dirty air filter, clogged spark arrestor, incorrect fuel mix | Clean air filter and spark arrestor screen. Use fresh 50:1 fuel mix. |
| Excessive vibration | Damaged cutting tool, loose attachment, bent drive shaft | Stop engine. Inspect and replace damaged tool. Ensure attachment is secure. |
| Attachment does not drive | Coupling not engaged, drive shaft broken, gear damage | Re-attach tool securely. If problem persists, see your STIHL dealer. |
