Safety Information

Read all instructions before use. Always wear appropriate PPE.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, heavy-duty work gloves, steel-toed boots, hard hat, and close-fitting clothing.
  2. Inspection: Inspect the entire unit for damage or loose parts before each use.
  3. Clear Area: Ensure no persons or pets are within a 15-meter (50-foot) radius during operation.
  4. Electrical Hazards: Never operate near overhead power lines. Maintain a minimum distance of 10 meters (33 feet).
  5. Kickback Zone: Be aware of the guide bar's tip. Do not let it contact branches, wire, or other objects, as this can cause dangerous kickback.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. This is a professional power tool.

Assembly & Installation

Assemble the pole pruner to a compatible Stihl KombiMotor powerhead.

  1. Prepare Powerhead: Ensure the KombiMotor is turned off and the engine is cool.
  2. Attach Shaft: Align the attachment coupling on the HT KM shaft with the drive socket on the powerhead. Push together until it clicks securely into place.
  3. Install Guide Bar & Chain: Place the chain on the guide bar, ensuring cutting edges face forward. Fit the bar onto the sprocket nose and tensioning pin. Tighten the bar nuts hand-tight.
  4. Tension Chain: Using the appropriate tool (if required), adjust the chain tension so it snaps back lightly when pulled away from the middle of the guide bar. Retighten bar nuts to specification.
  5. Check Oil Flow: Start the powerhead and hold the guide bar tip over a light-colored surface. A fine line of oil should appear within 30 seconds.

CAUTION! Always wear gloves when handling the saw chain. It is extremely sharp.

Specifications

Controls and Operation

Operation is controlled via the KombiMotor's throttle trigger and controls.

Starting the Powerhead: Follow the specific starting procedure for your Stihl KombiMotor (e.g., set master control lever to cold start, pull starter cord).

Pruning Technique:

  1. Positioning: Stand firmly on level ground. Hold the shaft with both hands.
  2. Approach: Bring the moving chain into the branch from below, using the underside of the guide bar to make the initial cut for better control.
  3. Cutting: Let the chain do the work. Apply light pressure. Do not force it.
  4. Limbing: Cut smaller side branches first before removing the main limb.
  5. Overhead Cutting: Be mindful of falling debris. Always look up before and during the cut.

Stopping: Release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to idle. Engage the chain brake (if equipped) and set the master control lever to STOP.

Adjusting the Telescopic Shaft

Adjust length for comfort and reach.

  1. Loosen the shaft locking mechanism (usually a twist collar or clamp).
  2. Extend or retract the inner shaft to the desired length.
  3. Ensure the shaft is fully engaged and the locking holes/indicators are aligned.
  4. Tighten the locking mechanism securely.
  5. Test the connection by gently trying to twist the shaft sections. There should be no movement.

Tip: Use the shortest length necessary for the job to maximize control and reduce fatigue.

Maintenance & Chain Care

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety.

Sharpening the Saw Chain

A sharp chain is safer and more efficient.

  1. Secure the Bar: Clamp the guide bar in a vice.
  2. Identify Cutter Teeth: Note the filing angle marked on the cutter (typically 30° or 35°).
  3. Use Correct File: Use a round file of the exact diameter specified for your chain (e.g., 4.0 mm). Use a filing guide for consistency.
  4. File Technique: Hold the file level with the marked angles. File from inside the cutter to outside with smooth, even strokes. Apply equal pressure and the same number of strokes to each cutter.
  5. Check Depth Gauges: After several sharpenings, file down the depth gauges (rakers) using a flat file and depth gauge tool to maintain proper height difference.

WARNING! Wear cut-resistant gloves. A poorly sharpened chain can increase kickback risk.

Storage

Store the unit properly to prevent damage and corrosion.

  1. Clean the entire unit of sap, dirt, and wood chips.
  2. Remove the guide bar and chain. Clean them thoroughly and coat with a light oil.
  3. Drain the fuel from the KombiMotor if storing for more than 30 days (follow powerhead manual).
  4. Store the unit in a dry, secure, and well-ventilated place, out of reach of children.
  5. Hang the unit or store it lying flat to avoid bending the guide bar.

CAUTION! Fuel is highly flammable. Store fuel cans separately in an approved container.
