Stihl FS 130 Repair Manual
The Stihl FS 130 is a professional-grade, straight-shaft trimmer/brushcutter featuring a powerful 2-stroke engine, electronic ignition (CDI), anti-vibration system, ErgoStart, and a modular design for easy maintenance and repair. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for troubleshooting, disassembly, component replacement, assembly, and adjustment procedures specific to the FS 130 model. Below are key sections covering safety, specifications, maintenance schedules, engine repair, fuel system, ignition system, cutting head/gear drive, and troubleshooting.
Safety Precautions & Symbols
Before any repair, ensure the unit is off, cool, and the spark plug boot is disconnected. Wear safety glasses and gloves. Work in a clean, well-ventilated area.
| Symbol/Area | Meaning/Precaution |
| Fuel Handling | Drain fuel tank before repair. Use approved fuel/oil mix (50:1). No smoking. |
| Sharp Components | Handle cutting blades/trimmer head with care; wear cut-resistant gloves. |
| Hot Surfaces | Allow muffler and cylinder to cool completely before disassembly. |
| Springs & Tension | Clutch and starter springs are under tension; use proper tools to release. |
| Fasteners | Use correct Torx/socket wrenches. Replace stripped or damaged screws. |

Maintenance Schedule
Regular maintenance prevents major repairs. Follow intervals based on operating hours.
- Daily/Before Use: Check for loose fasteners, leaks, damage. Clean air intake.
- Every 25 Hours: Clean/check spark plug (gap 0.5mm). Check fuel filter.
- Every 50 Hours: Clean air filter (replace if damaged). Check clutch drum bearing.
- Every 100 Hours: Replace fuel filter. Check carburetor diaphragm. Inspect drive shaft.
- Seasonal/Storage: Drain fuel or add stabilizer. Clean entire unit. Grease gear head.
WARNING! Never operate unit with damaged or missing safety components.
Engine Repair (Cylinder, Piston, Crankshaft)
Major engine disassembly requires special tools (puller, ring compressor).
- Remove top cover, air filter, and muffler.
- Remove cylinder cover and decompression valve assembly.
- Unbolt and carefully lift off cylinder. Inspine for scoring.
- Remove piston pin circlips, push out pin, remove piston. Check rings for wear.
- To remove crankshaft: Support crankcase, use puller to separate halves (if required).
- Reassembly: Lubricate all parts with 2-stroke oil. Ensure ring end gaps are correctly positioned.
- Torque cylinder bolts to specified value (typically 10 Nm) in criss-cross pattern.
Note: Replace gaskets and seals during reassembly.
Fuel System (Carburetor, Tank, Filters)
Common issues: hard starting, poor idle, loss of power.
- Drain fuel tank completely.
- Remove carburetor cover and air filter housing.
- Disconnect fuel lines and throttle linkage. Remove carburetor (Zama C1Q-S267 common).
- Disassemble carb: Remove diaphragms (pump and metering), check for stiffness/holes. Clean jets with compressed air.
- Fuel Tank: Remove and clean sediment. Replace fuel filter and fuel line if cracked.
- Reassemble with new diaphragm/gasket kit. Adjust idle and high-speed screws to factory settings as starting point.
Tip: Use STIHL pressure/vacuum tester to check carburetor function.
Ignition System (Spark Plug, Coil, Switch)
No-spark condition troubleshooting.
- Spark Plug: Remove, check gap (0.5mm), clean or replace (STIHL part # 0000 400 1300).
- Ignition Coil: Check air gap between coil legs and flywheel (0.2-0.4mm). Use feeler gauge.
- Stop Switch: Disconnect wire from coil. If spark returns, switch is faulty.
- Flywheel: Check for sheared key if timing is off. Use puller to remove.
- Testing Coil: Use ohmmeter per manual specifications for primary/secondary windings.
CAUTION! Never crank engine with spark plug removed and boot unattached – risk of ignition coil damage.
Drive Shaft & Gear Head
For vibration, noise, or loss of drive.
- Remove cutting attachment and clutch drum.
- Detach drive shaft housing from engine unit.
- Inspect flexible drive shaft for kinks or wear. Replace if damaged.
- Gear Head: Remove cover, clean old grease, inspect spiral bevel gears for pitting.
- Repack with STIHL gear grease (part # 0781 400 0801). Reassemble, ensuring proper gear mesh.
- Check bearing in clutch drum for smooth rotation; replace if rough.
Anti-Vibration System
Reduces operator fatigue. Check if handles have excessive play.
System consists of rubber dampers at engine mounts and handle connections.
- Inspect all rubber isolators for cracks, tears, or disintegration.
- Replace by unbolting handle assembly or engine mounting points.
- Ensure all bolts are tightened to specified torque after replacement.
Starter Assembly (ErgoStart)
Repair for rope not retracting or starter slipping.
- Remove starter cover screws. Carefully release spring tension.
- Inspect starter pulley and pawls for wear. Replace if damaged.
- Rewind spring or replace entire starter assembly (part # 0000 400 1307).
- Check decompression valve on cylinder head; clean or replace if clogged.
Clutch & Throttle Cable
Clutch engages at ~2800 rpm. Symptoms: tool spins at idle or doesn't engage.
- Remove clutch cover and clutch drum.
- Use clutch holding tool to prevent rotation. Remove clutch nut (left-hand thread).
- Inspect clutch shoes for wear and springs for fatigue. Replace as a set.
- Throttle Cable: Adjust at carburetor lever for proper free play and full opening.
Troubleshooting Guide
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
| Engine won't start | No spark, no fuel, flooded | Check spark, fuel flow, carburetor. Pull with throttle wide open to clear flood. |
| Engine starts then dies | Fuel filter clogged, vent blocked, carb issue | Replace fuel filter, check tank vent, rebuild carb. |
| Loss of power | Clogged air filter, exhaust screen, carb adjustment | Clean/replace air filter, clean spark arrestor screen, adjust H/L screws. |
| Excessive vibration | Bent drive shaft, unbalanced blade, failed dampers | Inspect shaft, balance blade, replace anti-vibration mounts. |
| Clutch slipping/not engaging | Worn shoes, weak springs, grease on drum | Replace clutch assembly, clean clutch drum. |
| Gear head overheating/noise | Lack of grease, damaged gears | Disassemble, inspect, repack with grease, replace gears if pitted. |
Final Check: After any repair, reassemble completely, check all fasteners, and test run unit without load before use.
