Safety Information

Read and understand all safety instructions before operation. Always wear appropriate PPE.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear chainsaw chaps or pants, safety helmet with face shield and hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
  2. Pre-Operation Check: Inspect chainsaw for damage, ensure chain brake functions, check chain sharpness and tension, verify all fasteners are tight.
  3. Safe Operation Zone: Maintain a 15-foot (5-meter) safety zone from bystanders.
  4. Kickback Awareness: Understand kickback zone (upper quadrant of bar tip); never cut with this area. Always hold saw firmly with both hands unless using approved one-handed techniques for this top-handle model.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. This saw is for professional use only.

Assembly & First Use

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain. Prepare fuel mixture.

  1. Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar on studs, loop chain onto sprocket and bar groove, adjust tension via side knob, tighten bar nuts.
  2. Fuel & Oil: Use STIHL MotoMix pre-mixed fuel or mix high-quality 2-stroke oil with unleaded gasoline (50:1 ratio). Fill chain oil reservoir with STIHL chain oil.
  3. Starting Procedure: Engage chain brake. Set master control lever to cold start position (choke). Pull starter rope until engine fires. Move lever to warm start position. Pull again to start. Disengage chain brake before cutting.
  4. Break-in Period: Operate at varying speeds (no full throttle) for first 3-5 tank fills.

CAUTION! Fuel is highly flammable. Refuel in well-ventilated area with engine off and cool.

Controls and Components

Master Control Lever: Combines stop switch, choke, and run positions. Throttle Trigger: With interlock. Throttle Trigger Lockout: Must be depressed to access throttle. Chain Brake Lever: Front hand guard. Decompression Valve: Button near spark plug. Side-Access Chain Tensioner: Knob on side of clutch cover. M-Tronic Reset: Button near air filter cover (press for 3 seconds to reset adaptation).

Maintenance Points: Air Filter Cover (tool-free), Spark Plug, Chain Catcher, Muffler, Clutch, Sprocket.

Operation

For climbing and pruning. Use proper cutting techniques.

  1. Starting (Cold): Engage chain brake. Pull out master control lever (choke). Pull starter rope until engine fires. Push lever in one notch (half-throttle position). Pull again to start. Allow to warm up.
  2. Starting (Warm): Master control lever in run position. Pull starter rope.
  3. Cutting: Disengage chain brake. Use full throttle for cutting. Let chain do the work; do not force. For bucking, use dogs (spikes) for leverage.
  4. One-Handed Use: This top-handle saw is designed for one-handed use in certain positions (e.g., pruning). Maintain secure body position and three points of contact when aloft.
  5. Stopping: Release throttle, allow to idle briefly. Push master control lever to stop position.

Tip: Keep saw chain sharp. A dull chain increases effort and risk of kickback.

Chain & Bar Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety.

  1. Chain Sharpening: Use round file and guide. Maintain correct filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters evenly. Check depth gauges with gauge tool.
  2. Chain Tension: Adjust when chain sags from bar rails. Adjust via side knob with saw off and cool. Correct tension: chain should snap back when pulled from bar and not bind in groove.
  3. Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove. Flip bar regularly for even wear. Check for wear (especially "rail wear") and replace if grove is significantly widened.
  4. Sprocket Inspection: Check clutch drum sprocket for wear; replace if teeth are hooked or worn.
  5. Oil Flow Check: Run saw at full throttle over light-colored surface; fine line of oil should be visible.

WARNING! Always wear gloves when handling chain. Ensure chain brake is engaged during maintenance.

Engine Maintenance

Follow regular service intervals. Use STIHL-approved parts.

Daily/Before Use: Check air filter, clean if dirty. Check fuel filter in tank. Ensure spark arrestor screen in muffler is clean (if equipped).

Weekly/Every 10 Hours: Clean cooling fins. Check spark plug condition and gap (0.5 mm / 0.020").

Monthly/Every 50 Hours: Clean carburetor air passage. Check all nuts and bolts for tightness. Inspect anti-vibration elements.

M-Tronic System: Normally requires no adjustment. If performance issues arise, reset system by pressing M-Tronic button for 3 seconds with engine off. Run engine at idle for 1 minute, then at full throttle (no load) for 1 minute to allow re-adaptation.

CAUTION! Allow engine to cool completely before performing maintenance.

Storage

For storage longer than 30 days, prepare saw to prevent fuel system damage.

  1. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops to clear carburetor.
  2. Drain chain oil tank.
  3. Remove chain, clean, and soak in oil. Clean bar and sprocket.
  4. Clean entire saw, especially cooling fins and air filter.
  5. Store in dry, dust-free place, away from children.

CAUTION! Never store saw with fuel in tank for extended periods. Use fuel stabilizer if short-term storage is unavoidable.
