Safety Information & Warnings

Chainsaws are dangerous tools. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.

HazardPrecaution
KickbackAlways hold saw firmly with both hands. Use a low-kickback chain. Do not cut with the tip/nose of the bar.
Contact with chainKeep hands and feet away from moving chain. Ensure chain brake is functional before use.
Noise & VibrationWear hearing protection. Take regular breaks to avoid Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).
Falling branches & debrisWear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and cut-resistant leg protection (chaps).
Fuel hazardsRefuel in a well-ventilated area with engine off and cool. Use approved fuel/oil mix. No smoking.

WARNING! Read and understand the entire manual before operating the chainsaw. Always use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

Technical Specifications

Assembly & Initial Setup

Assembling the chainsaw from the box.

  1. Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar on studs. Loop chain over sprocket and onto bar groove, ensuring cutting teeth face forward on top. Install clutch cover and tighten nuts evenly.
  2. Adjust Chain Tension: Loosen nuts. Use tensioning screw to raise bar until chain fits snugly against bar (can be pulled by hand). Retighten nuts.
  3. Fill Tanks: Add correct fuel/oil mix to fuel tank. Add STIHL chain oil or equivalent to oil tank.
  4. Check Controls: Ensure throttle trigger, lockout, and chain brake move freely.

CAUTION! Always wear gloves when handling the chain. Ensure chain is installed in the correct direction.

Fuel & Lubrication

Proper fuel and oil are critical for performance and engine life.

  1. Fuel Mix: Use fresh, unleaded gasoline (minimum 89 octane) mixed with a high-quality 2-stroke oil at a 50:1 ratio. Shake container well before refueling.
  2. Chain Oil: Use specially formulated chain and bar oil for proper adhesion and lubrication. Check oil flow before cutting.
  3. Refueling Procedure: Stop engine and allow to cool. Clean area around caps. Fill tanks carefully to avoid spillage. Tighten caps securely.

WARNING! Never use straight gasoline, automotive motor oil, or old/stale fuel mix. This will cause severe engine damage.

Starting & Stopping Procedures

Cold Start (Engine not warm):

  1. Engage chain brake. Place saw on firm ground.
  2. Press fuel primer bulb (if equipped) 5-6 times.
  3. Set Master Control Lever to choke position (full down).
  4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine 'pops' (fires once).
  5. Immediately move lever to half-throttle (fast idle) position.
  6. Pull starter rope again to start. Engine will run at high idle.
  7. Blip throttle trigger to disengage fast idle. Saw is ready.

Stopping: Release throttle. Push Master Control Lever to STOP (0) position.

Operation & Cutting Techniques

Basic cutting principles for safety and efficiency.

  1. Stance & Grip: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, left foot slightly forward. Grip front handle with left hand, rear handle with right hand. Thumbs wrapped underneath.
  2. Basic Cut: Let the saw do the work. Apply light downward pressure. Use full throttle during the cut.
  3. Bucking (cutting felled logs): Support log off ground. Cut from top. For large logs, cut 1/3 from top, then finish from bottom to avoid pinching.
  4. Limbing: Cut branches from bottom side of log. Keep saw body clear of ground.
  5. Avoiding Pinch: Plan cuts to prevent the log from closing on the bar. Use wedges for large cuts.

WARNING! Never operate the saw above shoulder height or with one hand. Always be aware of kickback zone.

Maintenance Schedule

IntervalTask
Daily / Before UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Check fuel/oil levels. Inspect for loose fasteners or damage.
Every 10 HoursClean air filter. Check spark plug condition.
Every 20 HoursClean cooling fins. Check fuel filter. Clean spark arrestor screen in muffler (if equipped).
Every 50-100 HoursReplace fuel filter. Check clutch and sprocket wear. Have carburetor adjustments checked by a STIHL dealer.
Annually / Off-SeasonFull service: Replace spark plug, clean carburetor, check all components. Drain fuel for storage.

Chain & Bar Care

  1. Sharpening: Use correct round file size (typically 5/32" or 13/64"). Maintain original filing angles (usually 30°). File all cutters to equal length. File depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge.
  2. Bar Maintenance: Regularly clean bar groove and oil holes. Flip bar weekly for even wear. Dress bar rails with a flat file if burred.
  3. Chain Tension: Check frequently when new. A properly tensioned chain should snap back against the bar when pulled from the middle.

Tip: A sharp chain reduces effort, improves safety, and extends the life of the saw.

Troubleshooting Guide

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Engine will not startNo spark, flooded, stale fuel, clogged filterCheck spark plug. Use fresh fuel mix. Clean air/fuel filters. Follow cold start procedure exactly.
Engine starts then diesClogged fuel filter, carburetor issues, ventReplace fuel filter. Check tank vent. May need carburetor service.
Loss of powerDirty air filter, clogged spark arrestor, dull chainClean air filter and spark arrestor screen. Sharpen chain.
Chain does not oilEmpty oil tank, clogged oil holes, faulty pumpFill tank. Clean bar oil holes. Check oil line for leaks. Test oil pump output.
Chain runs at idleIdle speed too high, clutch stickingAdjust idle speed lower (dealer service). Clean clutch drum.
Excessive vibrationLoose components, unbalanced chain, AV mounts wornTighten all fasteners. Sharpen chain evenly. Inspect anti-vibration mounts.

Storage & Winterization

For storage longer than 30 days:

  1. Drain all fuel from the tank and carburetor by running the engine until it stops.
  2. Remove spark plug, add a teaspoon of 2-stroke oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly 2-3 times to coat internals, reinstall plug.
  3. Clean the entire saw thoroughly. Remove bar and chain; clean and coat with oil.
  4. Store in a dry, secure place, out of reach of children.

CAUTION! Storing saw with fuel in the carburetor will cause varnish and clogging, requiring professional service.
