Maintenance Procedures

Perform maintenance with engine off and cool. Use only STIHL replacement parts.

  1. Air Filter: Clean regularly. Remove filter cover. Tap filter clean or wash in soapy water. Dry completely before reinstalling.
  2. Spark Plug: Check and clean every 50 operating hours. Gap: 0.5 mm (0.020 in). Replace if electrodes are worn.
  3. Spark Arrestor Screen: Clean every 100 hours. Remove muffler cover. Carefully remove and clean screen with wire brush.
  4. Fuel Filter: Replace annually or if clogged. Use filter pick to remove from tank.
  5. Exterior Cleaning: Keep unit clean. Use a soft brush or cloth. Do not use high-pressure water.

CAUTION! Never operate with a dirty air filter or clogged spark arrestor. This can cause overheating and engine damage.

Storage Guidelines

Prepare unit for storage if not used for more than 30 days.

  1. Drain fuel tank completely and run carburetor dry.
  2. Remove spark plug and pour one teaspoon of engine oil into cylinder. Pull starter cord slowly to distribute oil, then reinstall plug.
  3. Clean entire unit thoroughly.
  4. Store in a dry, well-ventilated, and secure place, out of reach of children.
  5. Cover unit to keep dust free.

Tip: Using STIHL MotoMix eliminates the need to drain the fuel system for seasonal storage up to 2 years.
