Safety Instructions

Read all instructions before operation. Wear proper PPE.

  1. Always wear: Safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, and steel-toe boots.
  2. Clear work area of obstacles and ensure secure footing.
  3. Never operate with one hand or above shoulder height.
  4. Keep bystanders at least 15 feet away.
  5. Do not operate when fatigued or under influence.

WARNING! Chainsaw kickback can cause severe injury. Maintain firm grip and proper stance.

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain.

  1. Attach guide bar: Remove side cover, align bar with studs, ensure chain direction is correct.
  2. Install chain: Place chain over sprocket and bar, adjust tension with side knob.
  3. Fill tanks: Use STIHL 2-stroke oil mixed 50:1 with gasoline (89 octane minimum).
  4. Add bar & chain oil: Use STIHL HP Ultra or equivalent.
  5. Check chain brake: Ensure it moves freely and engages properly.

CAUTION! Use only STIHL-approved fuels and lubricants. Improper mix can damage engine.

Controls and Components

Main controls: Master Control lever (stop/run/choke), throttle trigger, throttle trigger lockout, chain brake lever, decompression valve.

Components: Front handle with hand guard, rear handle, fuel tank cap, oil tank cap, spark plug, air filter cover, muffler, chain catcher, and bumper spike.

Master Control positions: STOP (0) - engine off; RUN (I) - normal operation; START (⏻) - cold start with choke. Chain brake: Push forward to engage (stop chain), pull back to disengage.

Starting & Stopping

Starting procedure for cold and warm engine.

  1. Place on clear, level ground. Engage chain brake.
  2. Press decompression valve (cold starts only).
  3. Set Master Control to START (⏻) position.
  4. Press throttle trigger lockout and squeeze throttle once.
  5. Pull starter handle until engine fires (1-2 pulls).
  6. Move Master Control to RUN (I). Pull starter to start.
  7. Disengage chain brake before cutting.

Stopping: Release throttle, move Master Control to STOP (0).

Operating Instructions

Proper cutting techniques for safety and efficiency.

  1. Felling trees: Plan escape path, make notch cut, then felling cut with hinge.
  2. Limbing: Work from trunk outward, keep saw close to body.
  3. Bucking: Support log properly, cut from top down.
  4. Avoid kickback: Do not touch tip of bar to wood.
  5. Maintain chain sharpness: Sharp chain reduces effort and kickback risk.
  6. Regular lubrication: Check oil flow before each use.

Tip: Let saw do the work; don't force it through cuts.

Maintenance Schedule

Daily and periodic maintenance tasks.

TaskFrequencyProcedure
Check chain tensionBefore each useAdjust with side tensioner
Clean air filterEvery 5 hoursRemove, wash in soapy water, dry
Check spark plugEvery 20 hoursClean or replace (gap 0.020")
Clean cooling finsEvery 20 hoursRemove debris from cylinder fins
Replace fuel filterEvery 50 hoursUse STIHL replacement filter
Check clutch drum/sprocketEvery 100 hoursReplace if worn

Chain & Bar Care

Proper chain maintenance extends life and improves safety.

  1. Sharpening: Use round file (7/32" for 3/8" chain) at 30° angle.
  2. Depth gauges: File to 0.025" below cutter top.
  3. Bar maintenance: Clean groove weekly, flip bar monthly for even wear.
  4. Chain lubrication: Ensure oil port is clear, adjust flow if needed.
  5. Chain replacement: Replace when cutters are worn to 0.16" (4 mm).

CAUTION! Always wear gloves when handling chain. Disconnect spark plug wire.

Storage Guidelines

Proper storage prevents fuel system issues.

  1. Long-term storage: Drain fuel tank and run until empty.
  2. Remove chain, clean, and store in oil.
  3. Clean entire saw, especially air intake and cooling fins.
  4. Store in dry place, cover to prevent dust accumulation.
  5. For winter storage: Add fuel stabilizer if not draining.

WARNING! Never store with fuel in tank for more than 30 days.
