Specifications

Assembly & Initial Setup

Assembling your chainsaw from the box.

  1. Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar on studs. Loop chain over sprocket and onto bar rails with cutters facing forward on top. Install clutch cover and tighten nuts finger-tight. Adjust chain tension (see section 9). Final tighten nuts.
  2. Fill Fluids: Add correct fuel/oil mix to fuel tank. Add STIHL chain oil or equivalent to oil tank.
  3. Check Controls: Ensure throttle trigger, lockout, and chain brake function smoothly.

CAUTION! Always wear protective gloves when handling the chain. The chain is extremely sharp.

Fuel & Oil Mixture

Using the correct fuel is critical for engine life.

WARNING! Gasoline is highly flammable. Mix and store in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, flames, or heat sources.

Starting & Stopping Procedure

Cold Start (Engine not warm):

  1. Place saw on firm, level ground. Engage chain brake.
  2. Press decompression valve (if equipped).
  3. Set master control lever to choke position (full down).
  4. Pump primer bulb (if equipped) until fuel is visible.
  5. Pull starter rope sharply until engine 'pops' (fires once).
  6. Move master control lever to half-throttle position (mid-position).
  7. Pull starter rope again until engine starts.
  8. Briefly blip throttle to disengage fast-idle. Allow to warm up.

Warm Start: Set master control lever to half-throttle position and pull starter rope.

Stopping: Release throttle. Move master control lever to STOP position.

Operation & Cutting Techniques

Basic cutting principles for safety and efficiency.

  1. Stance & Grip: Stand firmly with feet apart. Grip rear handle with right hand, front handle with left hand, thumbs wrapped underneath.
  2. Kickback Awareness: Never cut with the upper tip of the bar. Be prepared for reactive forces.
  3. Basic Cut: Let the chain do the work. Apply light downward pressure. Use full throttle during the cut.
  4. Felling & Limbing: Follow standard felling procedures (notch, hinge, back cut). For limbing, support the log and cut from top down when possible.
  5. Buckling: Support log off ground. Cut from top to avoid pinching the bar.

CAUTION! Always plan your cut and escape path. Be aware of falling limbs and shifting logs.

Chain Sharpening & Tensioning

Chain Tension: Chain should be snug against the bar but pull freely by hand. Adjust when cold.

  1. Loosen bar nuts.
  2. Turn tensioning screw until cutters just contact bottom of bar rail.
  3. Lift tip of bar up and tighten bar nuts securely.
  4. Re-check tension. A properly tensioned chain will not sag from the bar.

Sharpening: Use correct round file size (typically 7/32" for .404" chain). Maintain original filing angles (typically 30°). File all cutters to equal length. Check depth gauges regularly and file down if necessary using a flat file and gauge.
