Chain ContactEnsure chain brake is functional. Keep bystanders at a safe distance.
Falling LimbsBe aware of your surroundings, especially overhead hazards.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. Read and understand this manual completely before operation.

Specifications & Features

Assembly & First-Time Setup

Unpack and inspect all components. Assemble on a clean, stable surface.

  1. Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar on studs, loop chain over sprocket and onto bar rails with cutting edges facing forward. Adjust tension.
  2. Fill Tanks: Add proper fuel/oil mix to fuel tank and STIHL chain oil to oil tank.
  3. Check Controls: Ensure throttle trigger, throttle lockout, and chain brake operate smoothly.
  4. Initial Start: Follow cold-start procedure in a safe area.

CAUTION! Use only STIHL-approved guide bars, chains, and lubricants. Incorrect assembly can lead to failure and injury.

Controls & Operation

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting the engine.

Main Controls: Front Handle with Hand Guard/Chain Brake, Rear Handle with Throttle Trigger, Throttle Lockout, Master Control Lever (Choke/Start/Run), Decompression Valve Button, Chain Tensioner, Manual Fuel Pump (Primer).

Operation: Always use a firm two-handed grip. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart for balance. Let the saw do the work; do not force it. Plan your cut and escape path before starting.

Fuel & Lubrication System

Fuel Mix: Use a high-quality 2-stroke engine oil mixed with unleaded gasoline (min. 89 octane) at a ratio of 50:1 (2.6 oz oil per 1 gal gas). Shake container thoroughly.

Chain Oil: Use STIHL chain oil or a quality biodegradable bar & chain oil for optimal lubrication and bar life. Check oil flow before each use.

WARNING! Never use straight gasoline, automotive motor oil, or dirty/old fuel mix. This will cause severe engine damage.

Starting & Stopping Procedures

Cold Start:

  1. Engage chain brake. Set Master Control lever to choke position (full down).
  2. Press decompression valve (if equipped). Press fuel pump primer bulb 5-10 times.
  3. Place saw on ground, hold rear handle with right foot. Pull starter rope sharply until engine fires once.
  4. Move Master Control lever to half-throttle position. Pull starter rope again until engine starts.
  5. Briefly blip throttle to disengage fast-idle. Release chain brake.

Warm Start: Set Master Control lever to half-throttle position and pull starter.

Stopping: Release throttle, allow engine to idle. Push Master Control lever up to "STOP" position.

Routine Maintenance Schedule

IntervalTask
Daily / Before UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Inspect for loose nuts/bolts. Clean air intake and cooling fins.
Every 10 HoursClean spark plug, check electrode gap (0.020"). Clean or replace air filter.
Every 20 HoursCheck fuel filter and replace if clogged. Clean spark arrestor screen in muffler.
Every 50 HoursCheck clutch, sprocket, and anti-vibration elements. Grease needle bearing in clutch drum.
Annually / 100 HrsReplace fuel line and filter if cracked. Have carburetor adjusted by a STIHL dealer.

Chain Sharpening & Tensioning

A sharp, properly tensioned chain is critical for safety and performance.

  1. Tensioning: Loosen bar nuts. Use adjustment screw to raise bar until chain fits snugly against bar (can be pulled by hand but not sag from bottom). Retighten bar nuts.
  2. Sharpening: Use correct round file size for your chain. Maintain specified filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters to equal length. Lightly file depth gauges with a flat file.

Tip: File from inside cutter to outside. Rotate file slightly with each stroke. Sharpen frequently for best results.
