Safety Instructions & Symbols

Critical safety information to prevent serious injury or death. Understand all warning symbols and instructions before operation.

Symbol/ItemDescription
⚠️ WARNINGIndicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
⚠️ CAUTIONIndicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.
📘 NOTICEIndicates a practice not related to personal injury, such as potential property damage.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)Always wear: safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps/pants, and sturdy boots.
Kickback ZoneDo not let the upper quadrant of the guide bar nose contact wood or other objects.
Chain BrakeTest before each use. Engage manually or via inertia in a kickback event.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in severe injury from kickback, chain contact, or falling branches.

Features & Components

Key components and features of the Stihl 026 chainsaw.

  1. Engine: STIHL single-cylinder, two-stroke gasoline engine with electronic ignition (CDI).
  2. Anti-Vibration System: Reduces operator fatigue by dampening vibrations from the engine and cutting assembly.
  3. QuickStop® Chain Brake: Inertia-activated brake stops the chain within milliseconds if kickback occurs.
  4. Decompression Valve: Eases starting by reducing compression in the cylinder.
  5. Side-Access Chain Tensioner: Allows for easy chain adjustment without tools from the side of the saw.
  6. STIHL Oilomatic® Saw Chain: Self-lubricating chain with built-in oil channels.
  7. Fuel & Oil Caps: Clearly marked for gasoline/oil mixture and chain/bar oil.
  8. Throttle Trigger & Lockout:Prevents accidental throttle engagement.

Assembly & Preparation

Steps to assemble your new Stihl 026 chainsaw for first-time use.

  1. Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar onto studs, fit drive links of chain into bar groove and around sprocket, tension correctly.
  2. Fill Chain Oil Tank: Use STIHL or approved biodegradable chain oil. Do not use waste oil.
  3. Prepare Fuel Mix: Use 50:1 mixture of 89+ octane unleaded gasoline and STIHL 2-cycle engine oil. Shake well.
  4. Fill Fuel Tank: Add prepared fuel mixture to the fuel tank.
  5. Check All Fasteners: Ensure bar nuts, side cover, and handles are secure.

CAUTION! Assemble on a clean, stable surface. Keep chain away from skin and clothing.

Fuel & Lubrication

WARNING! Fuel is highly flammable. Mix and store in approved containers outdoors. No smoking.

Starting & Stopping Procedure

Cold Start (Engine not warm), Warm Start (Engine recently run), and Stopping.

Cold Start: 1. Set master control lever to choke position (⬇). 2. Press fuel pump bulb (primer) 5-10 times until fuel is visible. 3. Place saw on firm ground, hold front handle with left hand, place right foot through rear handle. 4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine fires (usually 2-5 pulls). 5. Immediately move master control lever to half-throttle position (⬆). 6. Pull starter rope again to start. Let run briefly, then squeeze throttle trigger to disengage fast idle.

Warm Start: Master control lever in half-throttle position (⬆). No choke or priming needed.

Stopping: Release throttle, let engine idle, push master control lever to STOP (0).

Operating Instructions

Proper cutting techniques to ensure safety and efficiency.

  1. Stance & Grip: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, firm grip with both hands, thumbs wrapped around handles.
  2. Basic Cutting: Let the chain do the work. Apply light downward pressure. Do not force the saw.
  3. Kickback Prevention: Be aware of the kickback zone (upper quadrant of bar tip). Do not cut with this part of the bar.
  4. Bucking (Cutting felled logs): Support log properly. Cut from top down. Beware of binding.
  5. Felling Trees: For trained professionals only. Requires notch, hinge, and back cut.

WARNING! Always plan your cut and escape path. Never operate above shoulder height or on a ladder.

Maintenance Schedule

IntervalTask
Before Each UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Check all fasteners. Test chain brake function.
Every 5 HoursClean air filter. Check spark plug condition.
Every 20 HoursClean spark arrestor screen (muffler). Clean cooling fins. Check fuel filter.
Every 100 HoursReplace fuel filter. Check clutch, sprocket, and anti-vibration elements.
End of SeasonDrain fuel tank and run carburetor dry for storage. Clean entire saw.

Chain Sharpening & Tensioning

Proper chain maintenance is critical for performance and safety.

  1. Tensioning: Loosen bar nuts. Use side tensioner screw to adjust until drive links just contact bottom of bar rail. Tighten bar nuts. Chain should pull smoothly around bar by hand.
  2. Sharpening: Use correct round file size (typically 5/32" or 4.0mm for .325" pitch). Maintain factory-filed angles (typically 30°). File all cutters to equal length. File depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge.

NOTICE: A dull or loose chain increases kickback risk, wear, and fuel consumption.
