Safety Information

Read and understand all instructions before operation. Always wear proper PPE.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear chainsaw chaps or pants, safety helmet with face shield and hearing protection, cut-resistant gloves, and steel-toe boots.
  2. Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders and pets at least 15 feet away. Ensure secure footing. Be aware of kickback zone.
  3. Chain Brake Test: Test QuickStop® function before each use by engaging brake with front hand guard.
  4. Fuel Safety: Refuel in well-ventilated area, with engine off and cool. Use STIHL MotoMix® or proper fuel/oil mix (50:1).

WARNING! Kickback can cause severe injury or death. Always grip saw firmly with both hands. Do not operate above shoulder height or with one hand.

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain.

  1. Attach guide bar: Remove side cover screws, position bar over studs, ensure tensioning pin engages in bar hole.
  2. Install chain: Place chain over sprocket and bar, ensuring cutting teeth face forward on top of bar.
  3. Tension chain: Use side-access tensioner to adjust until chain snaps back when pulled from bar. Tighten side cover nuts.
  4. Fill tanks: Add proper fuel/oil mix to fuel tank and STIHL chain oil to oil tank.

CAUTION! Chain must be properly tensioned. Loose chain can derail; overtightened chain can damage bar or engine.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Master Control Lever: Combines stop switch, choke, and start throttle positions. Throttle Trigger Lockout: Must be depressed to engage throttle. Chain Brake Lever: Front hand guard activates QuickStop®. Decompression Valve: Eases starting. Side-Access Chain Tensioner: For easy chain adjustment.

Main Components: Top handle, rear handle, muffler, spark arrestor screen, fuel and oil caps, air filter cover, starter grip.

Adjustments: Carburetor (H and L jets), idle speed screw, chain tensioner.

Starting & Operation

Cold Start Procedure (with decompression valve):

  1. Engage chain brake by pushing front hand guard forward.
  2. Set Master Control Lever to choke position (full down).
  3. Press decompression valve (if equipped).
  4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine 'pops'.
  5. Move Master Control Lever to half-throttle position.
  6. Pull starter rope again until engine starts.
  7. Blip throttle to disengage fast idle.
  8. Release chain brake by pulling hand guard back toward operator.

Warm Start: Set Master Control Lever to run position (horizontal). Do not touch throttle. Pull starter.

Cutting Techniques: Use lower quadrant of bar to avoid kickback. Let saw do the work; do not force. Plan escape path.

Chain & Bar Maintenance

Daily or every time you refuel:

  1. Check chain tension: Adjust if chain sags from bottom of bar.
  2. Sharpen chain: Use round file and guide. Maintain correct filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters to same length.
  3. Clean bar groove: Remove debris. Flip bar weekly for even wear.
  4. Check sprocket: Replace if worn (teeth hooked).
  5. Lubrication: Ensure oiler is working; chain should throw a fine line of oil.

CAUTION! Always wear gloves when handling chain. A sharp chain is safer and more efficient than a dull one.

Engine Maintenance

Regular maintenance schedule:

Fuel System: Use fresh fuel. Empty tank for storage over 30 days. Clean fuel filter regularly.

Storage & Transport

For storage over 30 days:

  1. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops to clear carburetor.
  2. Remove chain, clean and soak in oil. Store bar clean and coated with oil.
  3. Clean entire saw, especially cooling fins and air intake.
  4. Store in dry, secure place, away from ignition sources.

Transport: Always engage chain brake. Use scabbard or bar guard. Secure saw to prevent movement.
