Assembly & Installation

Unpack and inspect all parts. Assemble on a clean, stable surface.

  1. Attach guide bar and chain: Place bar on mounting studs, fit chain with drive links in bar groove, tension correctly.
  2. Install handle: Secure front and rear handles with provided bolts.
  3. Fill fluids: Add recommended 2-stroke fuel mix (50:1) to fuel tank and bar/chain oil to oil tank.
  4. Check all fasteners: Ensure all nuts, bolts, and screws are tightened securely.

WARNING! Always wear protective gloves during assembly. Ensure chain is properly tensioned to prevent derailment.

First-Time Operation

Before starting, perform pre-operation checks.

  1. Safety gear: Wear helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and chainsaw chaps.
  2. Check chain tension: Chain should snap back when pulled from bar.
  3. Start engine: Set master control lever to cold start position, pull starter cord until engine fires.
  4. Warm-up: Allow engine to idle for 30 seconds before cutting.
  5. Test chain brake: Engage manually to ensure proper function.

CAUTION! Never start the saw unless the chain is clear of obstructions and you are in a stable position.

Specifications

Controls and Functions

Master control lever: Combines stop switch, choke, and throttle lock. Throttle trigger: Controls engine speed. Chain brake lever: Manual engagement; inertia-activated. Decompression valve: Reduces cylinder pressure for easier starting. Throttle interlock: Must be depressed to operate throttle. Front hand guard: Protects hand and activates chain brake on kickback.

Maintenance Controls: Adjustable automatic oiler, chain tensioning screw, idle speed screw (carburetor).

Chain & Bar Setup

Proper chain installation is critical for safety and performance.

  1. Select correct chain: Match pitch, gauge, and drive link count to bar.
  2. Install chain: Ensure cutting teeth face forward on top of bar.
  3. Tension chain: Adjust until snug against bar, but able to be pulled by hand.
  4. Check lubrication: Ensure oil ports on bar are clear and oiler is functioning.

Tip: Always re-tension chain after first few minutes of operation as it stretches.

Operating Procedures

Follow safe cutting practices at all times.

  1. Starting: Engage chain brake, set master control to cold start, pull starter firmly.
  2. Cutting: Use full throttle when entering cut; let chain do the work.
  3. Kickback avoidance: Do not cut with upper tip of bar; maintain firm grip.
  4. Refueling: Stop engine and allow to cool before refueling.
  5. Storage: Empty fuel tank for long-term storage; run carburetor dry.

WARNING! Never operate chainsaw above shoulder height or with one hand. Always plan escape path from falling material.

Safety Features

Chain Brake: Stops chain within milliseconds if activated manually or by inertia. Throttle Interlock: Prevents accidental throttle engagement. Right Hand Guard: Protects from chain breakage. Anti-Vibration System: Reduces fatigue and improves control. Decompression Valve: Makes starting safer and easier.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Regular maintenance ensures longevity and safety.

Daily: Clean air filter, check chain tension and sharpness, inspect bar for wear. Weekly: Clean cooling fins, check spark plug, clean fuel filter. Monthly: Check all fasteners, clean clutch area, inspect anti-vibration elements.

CAUTION! Always disconnect spark plug wire before performing maintenance. Use only Stihl-approved parts and lubricants.

Regulatory Information
